So long as you have the storage, you essentially own the game for as long as your subscription is active. There’s none of PS Now’s demand for unreasonably high bandwidth to stream a game as you play it. It really is as simple as scrolling to the taskbar, selecting the games you want, and watching them download (relatively quickly even on average connections, I might add) before hitting play. Game Pass’s best quality is an ironic one, in that it’s probably the most accessible dashboard feature to have ever graced the Xbox One, otherwise known for its user-hostile interface. But it’s best to treat these pieces of shovelware in the same way you would those films you find in the very bottom bar of Netflix (you know, the one that reads “because you enjoy gory lesbian movies with musical numbers”). Nobody should be paying a monthly subscription to play the likes of Sacred 3, A Kingdom For Keflings or Dark Void, after all. I’ll happily admit that, out of all 118 games currently available through Xbox Game Pass, about half of them are total duds, not even worth the download.
The Xbox Game Pass might have left the console’s veterans feeling underwhelmed with its seemingly slim pickings, but for a Microsoft neophyte like myself, it’s the perfect opportunity to dive into a pool of gaming history that I’d never experienced until now.
Why Gears Of War now, though? Because I’m a sucker for a good deal, that’s why delaying my inevitable affair with bankruptcy as I play all four of these games digitally for the cool, cool price of £8 a month.
I’ve finished up the first, am currently roadie running through the second, and plan to take on both Gears Of War 3 and Gears Of War: Judgement (the dark horse of the franchise, I’m told) before ‘Broketober’ – as it’s now widely known – officially arrives. So Gears Of War is pretty good then, isn’t it? Sorry if that “hot” take sounds a little cold for 2017 (11 years too cold, to be precise), but I’ve only just got round to working my way through Epic Games’ seminal war series over the summer.
